Tipsy Sleep

Posted in Alcoholism

We have known for some time that alcohol has an effect on the quality of sleep a person gets, but now there’s new evidence to show that even one glass of wine could have you waking tired in the morning.

Information from researchers in a recent article indicated that prior knowledge has led one to believe that large amounts of alcohol disrupt sleep, but now it is believed that even drinkers who do not over indulge may not experience restful sleep.

While alcohol may help a person fall asleep quicker, during the sleep cycle your wakefulness increases if you consume alcohol. As the alcohol wears off, your body seems to wake up, thus not allowing you to have a good night’s rest. Larger amounts of alcohol take longer to wear off, but the end result is the same.

This study goes to show that even if you have one or two drinks per night and you chronically feel tired, your beverage of choice may be to blame. In order to determine if this is the problem, you may want to abstain from drinking a few nights in a row and see how you feel when you wake up. If you feel more rested than normal, then the couple of glasses may have been the culprit.

Researchers say while this information is interesting, there were a few flaws in the study. The study group was college students and they were asked to wear a wristband that indicated when they slept. They also had the participants self-report so the information that was retrieved may not be 100 percent accurate.
